As I rebuilt the Chalten massif with paint and brush strokes, I went there. I skirted the right side of the lake and remembered the contradiction of excitement and nerves that hit me as we moved deeper into the mountains. I painted a tent at Nipo Nino and heard relentless wind bellowing against thin shop nylon walls. I closed my eyes and heard glacial water rush down channels of blue ice. I marked the outline of each peak, and felt tiny camped at their center.
