Most of the floats washing up on beaches today are from Japan and other parts of Asia. Japanese fishermen started using them extensively from 1910 to the 1970's. They were used to keep fishing nets afloat, but due to wear and tear of the nets, many floats escaped and drifted thousands of miles and many years in the ocean before finding their way alongshore. For the lucky and determined treasure hunter, these floats can still be found on shorelines today in Japan, Scandinavia, Alaska, Washington, and Oregon.
